PHOTO: Diana Alawis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hunter Journalism\u2019s Neighborhood News class visited the Tribeca headquarters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypublicradio.org\/\">New York Public Radio<\/a> in November.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a tour, led by Rebecca Weiss, a senior listener services associate, students saw vintage microphones displayed as art throughout the station\u2019s two-and-a-half floors, whose boldly-colored walls are decorated with pictures of journalists and broadcasters from the station\u2019s past. Two live music spaces are also used by the co-owned classical music station WQXR.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally a city-owned property, the non-profit, noncommercial, broadcasting station was put up for sale by Mayor Giuliani after 9\/11. A group came together and formed the non-profit WNYC Foundation and bought the station for $20 million in order to keep it for the public.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with two call-in shows \u2014 \u201cThe Brian Lehrer Show\u201d and \u201cAll of It with Alison Stewart\u201d \u2014 the NPR-affiliate is also on top of its podcast game. There\u2019s \u201cDolly Parton\u2019s America,\u201d which is exclusively centered around America\u2019s famous country singer, and \u201cNancy,\u201d a show about the queer experience.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the station\u2019s most popular podcasts is \u201cTrump Inc.,\u201d a nonpartisan look at the financial dealings of the current president. Produced in partnership with ProPublica, recent episodes looked at \u201cthe business of conspiracy\u201d and the financial gains of quid pro quo.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WNYC Staffer Offers Advice to&nbsp;Student&nbsp;Job Seekers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Alice Wilder, associate producer of \u201cTrump Inc,\u201d likened her job to \u201cplanning a family vacation.\u201d She was hired at WNYC after a series of internships and fellowships, and encouraged the journalism students to take coworkers out for coffee to make an impression on them.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of her cover letters, she included a personal anecdote of getting her bag stolen by leaving it in a car on her way to report a story. She didn\u2019t get that job but her application was memorable enough that she was recommended for another job that she did get. She encourages applicants to mention their connection to the show they are applying for.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShow me you\u2019re actually listening to the show,\u201d Wilder said. \u201cPeople can tell.\u201d Mention a specific moment in a podcast or news show that the applicant particularly liked or changed the applicant\u2019s personal views about audio or news, she advised.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NYPR\u2019s many paid internship opportunities involve all the departments at the stations, from news shows to podcast to development and accounting.
